Greetings from Reika, Our President

In the wake of the election news, I have witnessed the amount of sheer despair, hopelessness, disbelief, anger, and numbness that has materialized within our community.  And while I share in so many of these intense feelings, which at first left me so very fearful of our uncertain future, it has reignited a spark within me.  A need to DO SOMETHING that I find as meaningful.  To TRY and claim space and ensure there is acceptance, safety and visibility here in the only LEATHER & LGBTQ Cultural District in existence.

The moment to be frozen has passed and it occurred to me that there is a place for me to still actively DO.  There is a place for all of us if we so choose to.  While the mission of the LEATHER & LGBTQ Cultural District has always been a passion of mine, it seems paramount, now more than ever, to roll up my sleeves and ensure that the hard work from those torchbearers before me continues to progress.  To remind the country that San Francisco will remain a city of inclusivity and pride for the diversity of our cultures and lifestyles that so many wish to watch perish.

So, I hope that as the year comes to an end, we can unite, recognizing the common threat that we are battling against, and rally together to support something that is visible, that can be connecting, that can be a beacon of solidarity, hope, and acceptance for others (and ourselves).

Time is precious.  I implore you to join me in supporting, growing, building, and recruiting others to join us in ensuring that we–the LEATHER & LGBTQ Cultural District–don’t disappear.

Take care of yourselves and each other.  For no one else is going to do it for us.

Solidarity in Leather,

Reika Faust (She/Her)
